How to repair a damaged personal folders file (.pst)

- Run scanpst.exe. How to find scanpst.exe: 

Outlook 97/98: click the Start button - Programs - Accessories - System Tools. Click Inbox Repair Tool.

Outlook 2000: 

Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 2000:

\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT 

For Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98:

\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\95

You get this error message:

"Properties for This Information Service Must Be Defined Prior to Use" when you are trying to import or open a   personal folders file (.pst) in Microsoft Outlook. Or: Microsoft Outlook: File access is denied. You do not have permission required to access the file.

Cause: The .pst file has been marked as read-only, remove the read-only attribute from this personal folders file.

You get this error message:

"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, start Outlook again."

Solutions: Use the Inbox Repair Tool, create a New Personal Folders (.pst) File, create a New Profile,install a New Set of MAPI files.
