Troubleshooting Problems with Microsoft Outlook 2000 Messages Format:

HTML Formatted Message Arrives Unformatted:

The recipient sees only an unformatted version of an HTML formatted message you sent, or sees an unformatted version with an attachment that repeats the message text.
Cause: the recipient's e-mail program doesn't support HTML.

For example, this problem can occur when you send e-mail to the America Online (AOL) user or Microsoft Outlook 97. These programs can only display the plain text. Some e-mail programs will attach the HTML version (AOL for example) and the recipient can use his Web browser to see the HTML message. For recipients whose e-mail program doesn't attach the HTML version, send only plain text messages.

Message Arrives Without Formatting or Pictures (but the recipient's email program supports HTML):

It's possible that the message have been routed through an e-mail server that doesn't support formatted messages.

Or:
Initially you created the message in HTML and then you changed the message format, or you created the message in another format and then selected HTML on the Format menu before sending the message. For example, if you initially create a message in HTML, and then you have changed it to  plain text on the Format menu, or click Plain Text and then selected RTF, you will lose this message format, even if you change the message format back to HTML. Also, you will lose the formatting if you create the message as a plain text than and then changed it to HTML on the Format.

If a picture is missing, it might be because your message contained a shortcut to an image on the Internet and the recipient doesn't have access to. To solve this issue, send a copy of the image.

HTML Message arrives with HTML tags in it:

Some older e-mail programs, have problems with the HTML format. Send messages to this recipient in plain text format.

RTF Message Arrives Unformatted and with Winmail.dat attached:

Cause: you have send Rich Text format (RTF) message for this recipient but his e-mail program doesn't support RTF. Instead RTF, use plain text (or HTML if recipient's email program supports it).

Recipient's email program supports RTF, but Message Arrives Unformatted
One of the following might have occurred:

You might not have enabled RTF for that Internet recipient. Even if you created the message using the RTF message format, you still need to enable RTF for that recipient. For information about enabling RTF, see Choose the Best Outlook 2000 Message Format for a Recipient.

If you're using Microsoft Outlook in the Corporate or Workgroup configuration with Microsoft Exchange Server, the Exchange system administrator might have disallowed sending RTF formatted messages to Internet recipients. Even if you enabled RTF for the recipient, the administrator's setting will override that.

Q241538: How Message Formats Affect Internet Mail

Message arrives with = or =20 throughout the text

You sent the mail using Quoted Printable, and the recipient's e-mail program didn't understand the Quoted Printable converted data. Instead, send e-mail using the send option Uuencode, a method that most e-mail programs can understand.
