Visual Interface Design for Windows: Effective User Interfaces for Windows 95, Windows NT, and Windows 3.1
Formerly the Director of Visual Interface Design at Microsoft, Howlett headed the team that designed Windows 3.1, 95 and NT. In this definitive resource she presents the graphic design principles and hands-on software development techniques essential to create visually functional and attractive Windows applications. Features a stunning four-color design with hundreds of illustrations.
Windows 95 for Dummies
One of the most popular books in the best-selling Dummies line, Windows 95 for Dummies, Second Edition, introduces rank neophytes to personal computing via Windows 95. The book opens with explanations of the most basic computing conventions: how to use the mouse, what the Shift key does, and why you shouldn't leave floppy disks in the sun. It also explains the concept of computer files and tells the reader in a light but competent tone what it means to open, close, move, and delete files. Then, Windows 95 for Dummies gets into the specifics of Windows 95. The book explains the Start button, the Taskbar, the Desktop, and the most important Windows 95 icons. All Windows 95 accessories get full treatment--there's even an introduction to Web surfing with Microsoft Internet Explorer. Finally, it wraps up with lots of troubleshooting help and some hints on making Windows 95 work faster.
Windows 98 for Dummies
Windows 98 for Dummies begins by explaining the differences between PCs and Macintoshes and detailing the differences between clicking and double-clicking. In the process of introducing the operating system, Rathbone explains lots of incidental factoids, including what a graphical user interface is and how the Print Screen button has been given new functionality in Windows 98. He then moves on to the mechanics of window management, explaining how to maximize, minimize, and incrementally adjust the size of application windows. Other chapters deal with cutting and pasting, the accessory programs, and the details of getting DOS programs to run properly. Rathbone's prose is clear and intelligent, and a superb index helps you zero in on the facts you need in a hurry.
Windows® 98 Simplified®
This fine book uses clear illustration techniques to explain how to perform elementary Windows 98 tasks, teaching such essential skills as copying files, formatting floppy disks, installing printers, surfing the Web, and communicating via electronic mail using Outlook Express. If you're completely unable to accomplish anything under Windows 98 and you're nervous about experimenting alone, Windows 98 Simplified will get you up to speed.
Windows 98 Annoyances
Windows 98 ships without its source code, but it's still possible to tweak it to look and behave the way you want. Sometimes you need to poke around and modify the operating system's binary files with a hex editor; sometimes all you need to do is perform some trickery with the interface as it is. Windows 98 Annoyances is for those who refuse to accept Windows 98 at face value.
Author David Karp is clearly a power user, but rather than simply dump reams of technical data upon the reader, he explains how to accomplish specific goals relative to Windows 98's appearance and behavior. Karp tells how to rig your system to flush its Temp folder (reclaiming disk space formerly used by crashed applications) every time it starts up. He also tells you how to build a text box that acts like a DOS command prompt. Excellent nuggets pack this book, and you can feel sure you'll implement at least a few of them on your machine.
Windows 98 Annoyances is, ultimately, about hacking Windows 98, never accepting anything as good enough, and always looking for a better way to do things. Karp provides excellent guidance to the Windows 98 power user.
Special Edition Using Windows 98 (2nd Edition)
This book is largely a reprint of its predecessor (which stands to reason, since many of the improvements to Windows 98 SE are under-the-hood performance tweaks such as improved hardware support) and retains the earlier edition's excellent prose. It's well suited to anyone who suspects Windows can be made to do something but needs help figuring out how.
The Unauthorized Guide to Windows 98 (2nd Edition)
The Unauthorized Guide to Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition gives savvy consumers foolproof instruction in the techniques that work and those that don't--with unbiased recommendations that are not influenced by any company, product, or organization. Written by a leading Windows 98 expert, this book ensures that you are armed with the most up-to-date information on using Windows 98 as your operating system.
