Automated (or batch) installations are not supported in Windows Millennium Edition (Me). Using the tools designed for previous operating systems (for example, Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition) for automated installation of Windows Me may result in problems or error messages during Setup.

Windows Millennium Edition Clean Installation Stops Responding During Setup

During a clean installation of Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), your computer may stop responding after you first restart it. Your computer may also stop responding after you restart it the second time while detecting hardware. The computer will start in Safe mode, however Normal mode is required to complete the installation. Cause:
There are no drivers for the Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) functionality, which VIA Technologies uses with the MVP3 chip set. The driver Viagart.vxd is not included in Windows Me, and may be installed from the distribution media for the specific video display adapter or motherboard utility program for your computer. How to Troubleshoot Windows Millennium Edition Setup

Windows Me Setup includes four major sections: Preparing to run Windows Me Setup - Collecting information about your computer - Copying files to your computer- Setting up hardware and finalizing system settings. If your computer stops responding (hangs) while the Installation Wizard is running, while checking your computer, or while the Preparing to Run Windows Setup screen is displayed, verify that you have quit all programs and all running tasks are closed. How to Troubleshoot Computer Hangs During Hardware Detection

When you attempt to install Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Setup may stop responding (hang) during the hardware detection process. During this phase, Setup determines what hardware components are installed in your computer. This phase requires you to restart your computer either once or twice, depending on the type of hardware in your computer. You can identify this Setup phase by the "Setting Up Hardware" screen. When you attempt to upgrade Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition, or upgrade Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition to Windows Millennium (Me), you may receive either of the following error messages: Setup must be able to create short filenames with numeric tails for files with names longer than 8 characters. Enable this option and try running Setup again. Long File Names Need to be Enabled.

Press Y for Yes or N for No: Y After you receive this message, you may continue to be prompted to choose a hardware profile during each reboot and Setup will repeat the standard selection process of each configuration to start Windows. How to Remove Programs from the "Open With" List

When you right-click a registered file type, you can use the Open With command to select a program to open the file. Each program you use is added to the Open With list for that file type, even if the program you are using is unable to open the selected file type. Microsoft Backup Tool Is Not Installed by Windows Millennium Edition

ScanDisk Runs Even Though Windows Shut Down Correctly

Although Windows may seem to shut down correctly, ScanDisk may run the next time you start the computer.

During the shutdown process, the contents of the virtual cache are written to the destination device. If the destination device is an Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard disk, data may be written to the hard disk's onboard cache but not to the disk itself. When this occurs, the data is lost from the cache when the computer turns off.

If a computer that is running any of the versions of Windows listed above contains more than 512 megabytes (for example, 768 megabytes) of physical memory (RAM) installed, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms: You may be unable to open an MS-DOS session (or command prompt) while Windows is running. Attempts to do so may generate the following error message: There is not enough memory available to run this program. Quit one or more programs, and then try again. Starting from the Windows Millennium Edition EBD Disables the Hibernation File

After you start a computer using the startup disk in Windows Millennium Edition (Me) the computer cannot resume from the hibernation it was sent into before starting from the Emergency Boot Disk (EBD).

Rather than restoring Windows to the exact point it was at when it went into hibernation, the computer will do a complete restart process as if it were just turned on. The previous system state (before hibernation) will not be restored and unsaved data may be lost.

When you attempt to browse the Internet by using a fully qualified domain name (such as www.microsoft.com), you may receive the following error message: The page cannot be displayed.

When you dial your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you may connnect successfully, but you receive the following error message: Error 691: The computer you are dialing in to cannot establish a Dial-Up Networking connection. Check your password, and then try again. This issue can occur for any of the following reasons:

You have set up the CompuServe service from the Online Services folder on the Start menu and you have not connected to CompuServe by using the CompuServe software included in Windows 98.

NOTE: The CompuServe setup program does not complete until you connect to CompuServe to set up the default Dial-Up Networking setting.

The Telephon.ini file is missing or damaged.

Your ISP uses a different file than the Rasapi32.dll file to verify the connection.

Dial-Up Connection in ICS Does Not Prompt to Disconnect on Client

When you quit Microsoft Internet Explorer on an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) client computer, you are not prompted to disconnect. The dial-up connection on the ICS host computer remains connected.

Quitting Internet Explorer on the ICS host computer causes a prompt to disconnect from a dial-up connection.

This behavior is by design.

Frequently Asked Questions About AOL in Windows ME (Millennium Edition)

I receive an error message similar to "The access company failed to respond properly." 

When I attempt to shut down my computer after I have been connected to the Internet using AOL, my computer hangs.

Ever since I upgraded to Windows Me, either I cannot stay connected to AOL or my computer hangs after 10 or 15 minutes of use.
